Sports Massage & Physiotherapy Kettering

Ironstone Sports Massage

Sports massage is a therapeutic massage technique used on tight muscles causing discomfort, usually due to repetitive strain or sporting injuries. Sports massage therapy can help release tension, increase blood circulation to the area and aid recovery of the affected muscles.

Sports massage uses a range of techniques such as trigger point release, stretching, kneading and pressure to address muscular discomfort and imbalances. A sports massage is tailored to the needs of the individual and targets problem areas to help bring relief to the recipient.

FAQ’s

What does a typical sports massage involve?

Appointments start with a discussion of the symptoms or area for treatment, and the therapist will check your postural alignment and ask you to do a few movements to assess mobility, before starting your massage. The appointment finishes with another assessment of posture to see if there is an improvement in flexibility, and may recommend exercises to help.

Can I exercise after my treatment?

You should refrain from exercise for the first 24 hours. This may increase blood flow to the area which could affect the result of your treatment.

What is the procedure time?

A standard sports massage appointment is 45 minutes.

Is the massage focused on one area?

Sports massage typically focuses on a problem area where you may be experiencing tightness or discomfort.

Does it hurt?

Sports massage is deeper than a relaxing massage, but should never be painful. The massage therapist will communicate with the client throughout the process to ensure the pressure is suitable.

What should I wear?

Loose clothing or clothing which allows access to the area to be treated, such as shorts or a sports bra.

Is sports massage just for athletes?

Sports massage is for treating muscle pain, and is suitable for anybody – whether the tightness is from sitting in an office chair, playing sport or for maintenance.

Are there any contraindications?

Sports massage is not suitable for those with high blood pressure, diabetes, a recent fracture or trauma, osteoporosis or who are pregnant. You will be prompted to complete a health questionnaire at the checkout to check suitability for treatment.
