Nia is the original fusion fitness workout and lifestyle practice combining classic movement forms from Martial Arts, Dance Arts and the Healing Arts, including Yoga.

Introduction to Nia

Nia was created in 1983 by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, at that time based in the San Francisco area and later moving to its current home Portland, Oregon. Nia uses physical activity to integrate one’s neurology with one’s outer body and musculature.

Nia is a non-impact program that is practiced barefoot, raising awareness of exactly how we are moving via the 7000 nerve endings in each foot, intensifying the physical and psychological feeling of being grounded.

It simultaneously addresses the body, mind, emotions and spirit and puts them all on the same page. You will gain fitness by practicing movements that shift body weight and by moving through varying levels of intensity, range and speed.

Inviting you to discover the benefits of Nia’s 52 moves that include stances, postures, steps, blocks and kicks that are compatible with your natural structure and that feel good. These movements create strength and muscle definition, promote balance, grace, flexibility, endurance and good posture.

A Nia class is practiced to the sounds and silences of music, the routines all provide a carefully crafted musical map to guide your movement and your attention.

About me Carol Hay

I am a Nia White Belt teacher and currently studying to gain my Nia Blue Belt.

As a child I was always intrigued by the unique and diverse ways that life expresses itself. I had a curiosity and passion to discover how best to live in an ever-changing world, in my ever-changing body.

I cultivated a deep love of nature, art and music and my free time has been spent learning about and practicing holistic living, exploring mindful practices and Yoga. I have worked in Complementary Therapy and in Graphic Art, and I have a strong connection to nature.

I became fascinated by the way Nia has helped me become more grounded and translate my passions into my movement and into my life.
